New Intimate, Acoustically Advanced and Flexible Hall for New York’s Lincoln Center

For nearly three years now, the New York Philharmonic has been performing in a concert hall that truly reflects its international stature: David Geffen Hall, located at the heart of the iconic Lincoln Center. Since its original opening in 1962, the hall had struggled with persistent acoustic issues despite multiple renovation efforts. A recent two-year, $550 million transformation not only radically reimagined the public spaces—including a redesigned lobby, a new 1,680-square-foot visitor center, a sidewalk studio, and a restaurant facing the Metropolitan Opera House—but also delivered a state-of-the-art performance hall that finally meets the artistic standards of the 180-year-old orchestra.

David Geffen Hall

To create such a hall while remaining within the footprint of the original building, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts brought together leading specialists in the field: Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects, experts in opera and concert hall design; Akustiks, a renowned acoustics consultancy from Norwalk, Connecticut; and Fisher Dachs Associates, a leading New York firm specializing in theater planning and design.

The design team moved the stage 25 feet closer to the audience and introduced wraparound “vineyard” seating, fostering a sense of closeness between performers and listeners. Audience capacity was reduced from 2,738 to 2,200 seats, with each seat positioned to optimize sightlines. Acoustic performance was further enhanced through the reconstruction of side tiers, resurfacing the walls, and the installation of an adjustable overhead acoustic canopy.

Versatility was another key priority, particularly for hosting film screenings and amplified performances. To that end, Canadian firm Gala Systems provided 21 manually operated wagons and 2 motorized stage wagons, along with 22 stage lifts. Thanks to this equipment, the stage and the seating area behind it can now take numerous configurations to suit a variety of events.

Now open to all repertoire

For the David Geffen hall’s audiences, the experience has been transformed: the sound, like the overall atmosphere, feels far more immediate and enveloping. The hall’s efficient adaptability allows it to host a wide range of events—including choral performances, recitals, semi-staged operas, dance productions, film premieres, and amplified pop and rock concerts.
