Joshua Ramus’ Mystery Box in Lower Manhattan is the New Adaptable Perelman Performing Arts Center

The Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC), unveiled on September 13, 2023, stands as the final major piece in the master plan for the redevelopment of the World Trade Center mixed-use campus in New York City. Cladded with translucent marble squares, this colossal cube-shaped building provides an inner glow during daylight hours and lights-up at night. Renowned architect Joshua Ramus of REX —an acclaimed New York City-based architecture firm—, is the name behind this new landmark spanning approximately 129,000 square feet (11,984 square meter) across three floors. It features a street-level lobby restaurant open to all, second-floor rehearsal and dressing rooms catering to artists, and three cutting-edge theatres on the third floor.

PIONEERING A NEW STANDARD OF ADAPTABILITY IN THEATRICAL SPACES
‘’ He [Joshua Ramus] refers to the building as a “mystery box,” alluding to the three exquisitely engineered, shape-shifting theaters tucked inside it. Small, medium, and large, […] they can be combined and reshuffled into more than 60 configurations, their floors raked or flat, balconies collapsed or thrust, walls moved, stages lowered.’’ – The New York Times
Collaborating closely with theatrical consultant Charcoalblue, Gala Systems delivered a comprehensive tailored mechanical solution that helps transform these theatres into flexible multi purpose spaces. With the installation of 18 state of the art Gala Systems seating lifts, they can transform into numerous configurations with the addition of removable platforms, custom seating and four moving seating towers. Along with automated acoustic walls and demountable balconies, the theatres can seamlessly morph into many types of immersive and intimate performance settings, including a theater-in-the-round, end stage, thrust stage, and traverse stage set-up. With such a world class venue, the PAC NYC is well-equipped to host an array of local and international events, from music, theater, and dance to chamber opera, film screenings, multi-disciplinary productions, and special events.
